A new book published as part of the NATO Science for Peace and Security Series. Based on an international NATO workshop held in Cartagena, Colombia, it brought together experts from different fields, including AI, biotechnology, and risk and resilience research. The book examines how artificial intelligence and biotechnology are increasingly being used together — and what this means for science, society, and security. It explores both the opportunities this creates and the risks it brings, including ethical concerns and potential misuse of information. Chapter 2, co-authored by Markus Schmidt, offers an accessible introduction to this topic, covering key opportunities, risks, and the need for responsible governance.
