Victor de Lorenzo (CSIC, Spain) and Markus Schmidt (Biofaction) published a review about the potential of Do-it-yourself Biology (DIYBio) in the journal Microbial Biotechnology. The article highlights the potential of for innovation, but also explores the many other implications of this movement. Democratization of the technology, social innovation, empowerment, education and more public participation in the design process of new and emerging technologies are some of the futures that DIYBio may hold.

The article titled “The do-it-yourself movement as a source of innovation in biotechnology – and much more” is – of course – open source.
